"Adoption is a gift of life." Hemlata Momaya, MSW, Executive Director
2016 Congressional "Angels in Adoption" Award Recipient
"We first met Hemlata Momaya of Bal Jagat (Children's World) in 1986. My husband and I wanted to adopt a baby and the adoption agencies in the area told us my husband was "too old." He was 40. We heard about Bal Jagat and International Adoption from one of those agencies and when we met Hemlata, we knew we were in the most capable of hands. She patiently and kindly and effectively led us through the paperwork, the visits, the minor road blocks we came across. She was our "voice" in the complicated process of adoption and we trusted her implicitly. She invited us to Indian themed parties, where we ate wonderful food, met parents in various stages of the adoption process and of course the lucky ones who already had their children--and what beautiful children! Hemlata also educated us on Indian culture and several times expressed the importance of finding a way to keep the culture of our child to be, so it would be an important part of her identity. We decided to give her a Hindi middle name and Hemlata provided lists of names for us and gave us the meanings of our favorites. We did not go to India to get her, she was escorted to LAX by two doctors at the orphanage in Calcutta (now Kolkata). I think Hemlata was as excited as we were, and so happy for us all.
Our baby girl was very small, but extremely healthy. She has been the light of her dad's and my life ever since that day she touched down, screaming her little head off at LAX. When she got to the age (perhaps 12) where she had more questions than I could answer, she wrote to Hemlata and Hemlata wrote back to her immediately with love, honesty and empathy. I was amazed at how much Hemlata still cared--and how she remembered us all. This is obviously more than just a job for Hemlata. Our daughter is now 25 years old and not only beautiful on the outside, but on the inside as well. She is our treasure and we cannot imagine a life without her in it. For anyone who wants a child so badly that they hurt inside, I would recommend Bal Jagat. Hemlata, you have given {so much happiness to} so many children, so many moms and dads! We love you!" - Suzy N. (Adoptive Mother of a daughter from India).
"The leadership at Bal Jagat is compassionate and serve as dedicated advocates for children around the world. Their commitment to redressing the plight of orphan children stems from social work experiences inside orphanages overseas. Bal Jagat has been matching caring parents with parentless children of all ages for over three decades, and now many of the adopted children are adults who, in turn, now wish to adopt and help other international orphans. The Bal Jagat extended family numbers in the thousands, and every family continues to be a source of joy for Mausami and her mother, Hemlata, founder of Bal Jagat. They are extraordinary people who handle each adoption with meticulous care and genuine warmth."- Nelinia V (Community Member)
"I have always dreamed of adopting a child. However, I really had no idea where to start. Thankfully, I was introduced to Bal Jagat Children's World. After meeting with both Hemlata and Mausami at their office in Long Beach, I was given a thorough introduction to the adoptive process. They were both very kind and patient, as I had many questions. I was impressed with the longevity of their agency, and the fact that they are a non-profit organization - I really felt that they were there for the children and new parents. I'm looking forward to the next stage of this process and couldn't recommend their services enough!!! Thank YOU!!" - Chris R. (Adoptive Parent in process)
